Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic disease worth specifically mentioning as it is unfortunately such a common condition in Australia. There’s also several different types of Diabetes that people can suffer from. These include:

Type 1 – Also referred to as juvenile diabetes because it presents in people under 30 years of age. This is usually controlled using insulin as the pancreas is unable to produce the hormone naturally.

Type 2 – Can be caused by lifestyle choices and genetic family history.

Gestational Diabetes – This is a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy and can be successfully managed with the support of health professionals like us.

Impaired Glucose Tolerance – In this condition blood glucose levels are higher than normal. People with this condition have an increased chance of developing Type 2 Diabetes.

Diabetes is a chronic condition that can affect every organ in your body. There is an increased risk of diabetes with age – so it is important to be aware and if you have any concerns, please make an appointment to have an assessment.

If you have already been diagnosed with Diabetes our team are also available to discuss your symptoms, risk factors and/or your current treatment.

We often recommend an annual diabetes comprehensive assessment along with 3 monthly reviews (when relevant) to manage the condition effectively. Our practice nurse is well trained in assisting us in proving a comprehensive diabetic management plan. We know that in many cases of diabetes, lifestyle changes play an important role in reducing the progression of the condition and preventing complications.
